This is a little project of beats made on the SP 404 MKii after having it for a few months. The process was to have a bunch of one shot samples, drums and melodic samples which I chopped and arranged into these beats. What I love about the SP is that it has a lot of limitations compared to the luxury of a standard DAW. You are forced to create within confines of it's available features. Sometimes the luxury of having too many options can be a bit of a road block to creativity so it's quite liberating having those options limited.

I have been listening to a lot of beat tapes recently and two things that have stood out to me are simplicity and brevity. Short beats means that the listening journey continues to move and flow rather than just sitting on a single loop/idea. In saying that there are a few beats in here that i felt were quite hypnotic and i could listen to them forever. I think both of these feelings of flow and hypnosis are captured in the form of water where one could feel the current of a stream constantly moving or on the opposite end be sitting on a body of water feeling like you're floating in eternity. Hence the theme of Vai which is water in the Tongan language.
